PLANNING POLICY

Background

The main function of the Planning Policy team is to evaluate the potential for change and produce policy based plans and strategies to guide future change, provide certainty for all those with an interest in the Island’s future, secure sustainable development and achieve regeneration. The statutory Development Plan provides the basis on which planning decisions are made.

The functions of the Planning Policy team include:
  • Preparing the Island Plan, the Local Plan for the Island, whose main document is the Core Strategy.
  • Producing the Statement of Community Involvement as part of the Island Plan.
  • Preparing Supplementary Planning Documents as part of the Island Plan.
  • Contributing to bid strategies, such as Single Regeneration Bid, Leader+, etc.
  • Providing input to the Island Strategic Partnership’s Sustainable Community Strategy – Eco Island.
  • Providing expert planning policy advice.
  • Providing a planning input to strategies of other agencies.

Parish and Town Councils requiring planning advice can find help here.

Local Transport Plan

The Island’s third statutory Local Transport Plan – The Island Transport Plan – was adopted in 2011 and sets the strategic transport guidance for the years 2011-2038, a timescale deliberately chosen to fit with the delivery of our road maintenance PFI project.

The plan, which fits with and helps deliver the Island Plan Core strategy and a range of other local plans and policies, sets the transport “vision” and “goals” for the Island and includes alongside it an Implementation Plan explaining how we will target our investment to help deliver our local priorities. The document and further information can be found here.
