Economic Development
Economic Development Delivery – Action Plan
This document was produced by the Isle of Wight Council and details the key actions to be delivered in 2010/11. These include actions to help businesses on the Island, including inward investment (with a focus on renewable energy) and support for existing businesses. The plan also identifies actions to provide for significant new employment land and to invest in the employment and skill needs of local people.

Employment Land Demand Study
The Isle of Wight Council commissioned GVA Grimley to undertake an employment land review in 2008. The report compared projected demand and existing supply.

The Employment Land Assessment provides an update of existing supply and projected demand for employment land over the plan period and summarises areas which can offer opportunities for economic growth and development.

Retail
Retail Capacity Study
The Retail Capacity Study was produced in March 2008 to provide an update assessment of quantitative retail needs capacity on the Island. The quantitative assessments look at the potential for the likely future demand for both new comparison and new convenience retail floorspace.

Retail Capacity Study Update
Since the publication of the March 2008 study, major changes have occurred in the national economy and the retail market. The Update Report considers the impact of current economic conditions on the quantitative need for floorspace and examines the extent of the need for new floorspace until the end of the plan period.

Halcrow Group was commissioned by the Council to assess the ‘health’ of the towns of Cowes, East Cowes, Freshwater, Newport, Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor.

Retail Uses Surveys for Cowes, East Cowes, Newport and Ryde
To inform the background work to the Medina Valley and Ryde Area Action Plans, the Council undertook surveys of non-residential properties in and around the town centre boundaries of Cowes, East Cowes, Newport and Ryde. Green Infrastructure Mapping Study
This Study provides an introduction to the concept of Green Infrastructure (GI) and what this means for the Island. The study identifies the assets that the Island has and how they combine to create a comprehensive network. The work also includes an assessment of deficiencies and opportunities within the network, and will form the basis of the Island's approach to GI which will be developed through the Green Infrastructure Strategy SPD due for adoption by the Council in Summer 2012. It has also informed the preparation of the Core Strategy.

Open Space, Sport and Recreation Audit
The Open Space, Sport and Recreation Audit has undertaken a comprehensive Island-wide audit of the distribution, quantity and quality of the Isle of Wight’s open spaces, sport and recreation facilities (including an assessment of the open space and recreational needs of the local community) in accordance with the requisite Government guidance set out in Planning Policy Guidance 17 and its Companion Guide.

Playing Pitch Assessment and Strategy
The Playing Pitch Assessment and Strategy for the Isle of Wight supplements the Open Space Audit and has been carried out in accordance with the requisite Government guidance set out in Planning Policy Guidance 17 and its Companion Guide. It presents the findings of quality assessment of outdoor sports facilities, consultation with a wide range of user groups, data analysis and GIS mapping work. This is a presentation of the facts that have emerged through the extensive research undertaken on the Island.

Heat Mapping Study
District heating systems can significantly contribute towards the Island’s targets to achieve the lowest carbon footprint in England. Provision of this heat by renewable or other low carbon fuels will result in a sustainable reduction in carbon emissions. The availability of a suitable source of heat will assist in obtaining high ratings under the Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH).
The Isle of Wight Council is considering using the planning process to encourage the installation of district heating systems in new developments. These systems will then act as seeds allowing expansion and retrofitting of district heating to neighbouring existing domestic and commercial/industrial users.
Heat maps of the Island have been produced to identify those areas having the highest heat demand density, both currently and as predicted if potential development in the Medina Valley, Ryde and The Bay are realised. As would be expected, the areas having highest heat demand density are currently within urban areas.

This report summarises the Council’s responses to the issues raised during the waste consultations undertaken in August and September 2009. The Council is expecting responses to each of the queries where Entec has been identified as the lead respondent by the end of May 2010 and, as soon as this information is available, the table (Waste Sites Summary Document for Consultation Responses – Summary of Comments and the Council’s Response) will be updated.
