ENFORCEMENT

No planning system is safe in its intentions unless the powers exist to take action (ultimately) against unauthorised work. The majority of complaints regarding unauthorised work fall into the following categories:
1
Operational development (building)
2
Change of use
3
Advertisements
4
Untidy Land
Most complaints are resolved without the need for formal action.

Enforcement can be complex and with a view to being open and transparent, the Council has recently reviewed its Planning Enforcement Policy for the whole of the Island. The purpose of the Enforcement Policy is to:
  • Set out what you can expect from the Council when you report a potential breach of planning control;
  • Give some simple advice on how the Council will approach investigating concerns that have been raised;
  • Set out how we will prioritise complaints;
  • Set out what we will do and what we will not do;
  • Provide useful sources of further information.

The document itself was adopted by the Council in April 2009.

The Council has produced a further policy document relating to the residential use of holiday parks (September 2009) – click here for policy.

If you wish to report some unauthorised development we will be able to give you a better service if you could use the complaint record sheet alternatively please contact us.
