Health ProfilesThe following page links to sources of information, data and intelligence on health on the Isle of Wight.
These profiles vary from giving a general picture of health, to focussing more closely on specific groups (e.g. children and learning disabilities) and issues (e.g. injury and tobacco) in each area.
What are Health Profiles?Health Profiles are the Department of Health’s programme to improve availability and accessibility to health and health-related information in England. Health Profiles give an overview of key health information for each local authority in a variety of formats, including reports, interactive tools and maps.
Who produces Health Profiles?Health Profiles are produced annually by the network of nine
Public Health Observatories in England working in partnership, and are commissioned by the Department of Health. Further information and details are available from

Why do we have health profiles? Health Profiles are designed to help local government and health services make decisions and plans to improve local people’s health and reduce health inequalities. The profiles present health indicators that show how the area compares to the national and regional average.

Child Health ProfilesThe
Child and Maternal Health Observatory (ChiMat) has produced Child Health Profiles, providing a snapshot of child health and well-being for each local authority in England using key health indicators. Child Health Profiles are in a similar format to Health Profiles, but focus exclusively on child health and well-being.
These profiles are designed to help local authority and primary care trusts improve the health and well-being of children and tackle health inequalities.

Interactive Child Health Profiles ChiMat have produced Interactive Child Health Profiles. These allow you to select your area of interest and compare key indicators with other areas in the same profile, as well as the best performance in England, in order to identify better performing areas from which lessons can be learnt.
These profiles are intended to help local organisations work in partnership to plan and commission evidence-based services based on local need.

East Midlands Public Health Observatory) has produced interactive maps of under 18 conception data at both local authority and ward level. These show whether conception rates are significantly different to the England rate.

North East Public Health Observatory. These have been produced in a report format, and are designed to give an overview of mental health risks, prevalence and services at a local, regional and national level.
The data is intended to be used to inform commissioners of health and social care services in their decision making, leading to the improvement of mental health, and mental health services.

Local Tobacco Control ProfilesLocal Tobacco Control Profiles are produced by the
London Health Observatory. These reports compare key indicators relating to the burden of smoking-related disease, costs and action for each local authority in England. These indicators are compared to the best and worst regionally, and with the rest of England.

Injury ProfilesInjury Profiles are delivered by the
South West Public Health Observatory, and provide a snapshot of injuries occurring in each local authority in England. Interactive maps and charts enable comparisons to be made regionally and nationally for a number of injury related indicators.
The aim of these profiles is to highlight the burden of injuries and large variations across England. The information should prove useful to the wide range of organisations with an interest in injury prevention.

Injury Profiles interactive tools (Web link)
National General Practice Profiles National General Practice Profiles have been produced by the
East of England Public Health Observatory (erpho), on behalf of the network of Public Health Observatories in England. This tool presents a range of practice-level indicators, such as local demography, admission rates and patient satisfaction.
These profiles are designed to support GPs, clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and PCTs to ensure that they are providing and commissioning effective and appropriate healthcare services for their local population.

East Midlands Public Health Observatory and the
London Health Observatory. This gives access to data on health inequality, and is presented as the slope index of inequality in life expectancy, for males and for females. In you would like more information

End of Life Care ProfilesEnd of Life Care Profiles are produced by the
South West Public Health Observatory on behalf of the
National End of Life Care Intelligence Network, and present data on the place and cause of death by age and sex. Interactive maps and charts enable comparisons to be made regionally and nationally for a number of End of Life related indicators.
These Profiles are intended for use by policy makers, commissioners and providers of end of life care services, among others, to identify areas and populations of need.

Learning Disabilities Observatory. These are produced in a report format and present data on the number and health of people with learning disabilities, as well as how well social services serve them. They are intended for use by, among others, planners in health services and social services.
