This document contains significantly more performance-based criteria than the previous document and provides guidance on the use of passive stack ventilation and continuous mechanical ventilation (with and without heat recovery). However, although new terms have been introduced such as purge ventilation and new tables provided which appear to complicate matters, it is still very simple to design ventilation for dwellings using a combination of openable windows, background ventilation and mechanical extract ventilation.

Good examples are given in Appendix C for designing ventilation systems for dwellings using all 4 approaches.

Replacement windows - it is recommended that replacement windows be provided with trickle ventilators.

Ventilator areas are now described in terms of equivalent areas rather than free areas. These areas will be indicated on the ventilators by the manufacturers.

For ventilation of other buildings, reference is made to many other documents. However, extract ventilation is required to all office sanitary accommodation, washrooms, food/beverage making areas, and rooms containing printers and photocopiers in substantial use.
