Driving Tests

To get your full driving licence you need to pass two tests, one theory and one practical.

Theory Test

  • You need to pass a theory test before you can book and take a practical test.
  • Practical tuition can start at any time.
  • The theory test is a computer-based, touch-screen test at various centres around the country.
  • There are 35 multiple-choice questions and you need to get at least 30 right to pass.
  • The cost of the theory test is £32.

Practical Test

  • You can only apply for your practical test once you have passed the theory test.
  • You won’t be tested on all the manoeuvres and there is random testing of the emergency stop.
16 or more minor faults will result in test failure – take a look at our syllabus.
    The cost of:

a weekday test is currently £62
a Saturday or weekday evening test is currently £75

  • If you pass your theory test but fail your practical test, you only need to take your practical
    test again.

You will need to book both tests separately (ask your instructor when to book the practical test) through the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) on 0870 010 1372, or fax applications to 0870 010 2372. There is a Welsh speaking line on 0870 010 0372 and a minicom line on 0870 010 7372.
