www.ancestry.co.uk general site with links to many other sites including all UK census information up to and including 1901 and sites such as 1837online and freebmd. Ancestry.com leads directly into US information
www.findmypast.com GRO register of Births, Marriages and Deaths plus links to all UK census information. Also Soldiers that died in the Great War. Now includes access to the 1911 census
www.freebmd.org.uk as yet incomplete transcription of UK birth, marriage and death certificates from 1837
www.freecen.org.uk as yet incomplete free transcription of the UK censuses

www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk the findings of a project based at University College London (UCL) that is investigating the distribution of surnames in Great Britain, both current and historic – 1881 and 1998
