Environmental Equipment

Many of the problems deaf and hard of haring people encounter in their daily lives can be helped with the use of special equipment known as ‘Environmental Equipment’. For many people their type of hearing loss cannot be helped by a conventional hearing aid but it is worth considering other equipment that may help to alleviate the problem. Even if your hearing aid is totally successful you may be helped with a particular problem with the addition of a piece of specialised equipment.

The equipment falls into the following main groups:
  • TV and Radio Listening Aids
  • Doorbells
  • Telephones
  • Alarms and Indicators
  • Communicators for people for whom a hearing aid is not suitable

Equipment can be issued on loan by the Isle of Wight Council Social Services Department or purchased privately.

who have a large display of the latest equipment available. You can make an appointment to come and try out the equipment to see what is most suitable for you.

If you are unable to travel to Newport, a home visit can be arranged. If you decide to purchase the equipment, or it is issued to you by Social Services, a trained volunteer can call to help with installation if required.
