WHAT WE DO:
The food enforcement officers in Environmental Health are responsible for ensuring that food manufactured, sold and consumed on the Isle of Wight is safe to eat and of the quality demanded.
Our objectives are to:
- carry out routine, risk-based food hygiene/standards inspections at frequencies, and to a quality, stipulated in Codes of Practice and departmental procedures to assess and ensure compliance with hygiene, safety, compositional and labelling requirements.
- carry out enforcement action that is proportionate, transparent, consistent and targeted, in line with the Council’s Environmental Health Enforcement Policy
- undertake prompt and thorough investigations, where appropriate, of food poisoning incidents, labelling irregularities, food complaints and food premises complaints.
- carry out surveillance and enforcement microbiological and/or compositional sampling of food and water, in accordance with Codes of Practice and good practice
- undertake to commit resources to promotional and educational campaigns in line with strategic aims and local needs to inform and encourage high standards in businesses and to educate the consumer in food hygiene and safety.
- advise new and existing businesses of their legal obligations with respect to food. This includes offering one to one coaching on the Safer Food Better Business food safety management package
- publish food hygiene star ratings of food businesses on this website and at the food premises to give food consumers an opportunity to make informed choices as to where they eat.
