Archaeological Projects

The Isle of Wight County Archaeology and Historic Environment Service relies on securing grant funding to carry out major projects which enhance our knowledge and understanding of the Island’s historic environment.

In recent years, the Service has undertaken two major coastal archaeological projects funded by English Heritage. These are the Wootton Quarr project, an intensive survey of a 6 kilometre stretch of coastline on the north east coast of the Island, and the Isle of Wight Coastal Audit, a rapid assessment of the archaeological resource of the whole of the Island’s coast and its estuaries. Vicky Basford has carried out a Historic Landscape Characterisation Project, again funded by English Heritage, and the Service is also engaged in Beach Monitoring, a small-scale project which followed on from the Wootton-Quarr Survey.
