Conflict Resolution

Target Group:
For Core front line staff, Specialist Roles, Supervisor/Team leader, Manager.  Courses may be negotiated for different role focus i.e. a course for those working in “care” roles may require a different approach than those who are in an “enforcement” role or “initial contact” role.

Course Aims:

The course is approximately 4 hours duration and delivered by an approved trainer for conflict resolution training - developed as a National Syllabus for staff in the NHS and is eminently adaptable for other public services.

The day has the following listed as objectives:

  • Describe the common causes of conflict
  • Describe two forms of communication
  • Give examples of communication breakdown
  • Explain three communication models that can exist in conflict resolution
  • Describe patterns of behaviours during different interactions
  • Explain the different warning and danger signs
  • Give examples of impact factors
  • Describe the use of distance when dealing with conflict
  • Explain the use of “reasonable force” as applies to conflict resolution
  • Describe different methods for dealing with possible conflict situations.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognise behaviours, communication and interactions that can lead to conflict
  • Understand how to minimise potential conflict situations
  • Have confidence in dealing with possible conflict situations through the use of effective communication and behaviours


Intended Impact:
This workshop is to support staff in dealing with conflict situations that may arise in their work role.  Although primarily aimed at front line staff with roles that interact with the public this workshop can also provide useful training for dealing with conflict situations within work.  The focus will be on; recognising potential conflict situations and triggers, the council’s policies and procedures relating to managing conflict situations, skills and understanding to minimise conflict with last resort actions to take.
