Observation and assessment in the early years, with a focus on the Two Year Old Check

Target Group:
Practitioners working with two year olds

Course Aims:

Through presentations, practical activities and discussions, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Examine the importance of observation in effective practice
  • Consider the most effective and practical way to make assessment processes manageable, with a focus on two year olds and younger children
  • Discuss how best to involve parents,  the child and other professionals
  • Consider what should be included in the Progress check and how best to write it
  • Develop effective processes for sharing the ‘Check’ and making use of this and summaries of children’s learning and development

Course Trainer:
Vicky Hutchin Vicky Hutchin has had a long career in early childhood education, beginning with work in playgroups, later becoming a nursery and reception teacher working in both primary and nursery schools. She began working in advisory posts in the mid 1980s for ILEA, first in the then famous Bilingual Under Fives Team, and later –post ILEA- as a consultant/adviser in Early Years in three local authorities. Vicky is passionate about getting the provision right for every child by providing motivating experiences, building on the children’s interests and enthusiasms. In 2005 she joined the National Strategies Early Years Team where she has worked as a regional adviser, then a senior regional adviser supporting local authorities (LAs) in London and the South East, occasionally venturing North. From January 2010 to March 2011 she supported the 16 LAs in the South West. She has written several books on the topic of assessment in early years and its central role in child central pedagogy and provision
