The Key Person - Principles into Practice

« Back

Target Group:
Day care managers and those with a responsibility for implementing the key person approach within their setting

Course Aims:

At the end of the course, the aim is that participants should have:

a)     A critical understanding of the key elements of attachment theory (separation anxiety; secure base; preferred attachment figures) as applied to professional interactions between children and adults in nursery;

b)     A critical understanding of the role of the key person in facilitating nursery attachments and how individual work with particular children should be combined with a commitment to team work and collective responsibility for a whole group of children;

c)      Understanding of the meaning and contribution of Work Discussion, as one form of critical professional supervision, as specified in the revised EYFS following the Tickell Review, and its contribution to key person practice.

Intended Impact:
That participants should, with the support of line managers and colleagues, facilitate a critical evaluation of the current stage of progress in implementing the key person approach in their own setting, agree a plan with the setting for the next steps in developing this implementation, and an agreement on how the achievement of these next steps will be assessed.

Prerequisites:

Key Persons in the Early Years. Peter Elfer, Elinor Goldschmied and Dorothy Selleck.

Routledge Taylor and Francis group London and New York, second edition 2012

Notes:
Lunch will be provided.

Course Trainer:
Peter Elfer - Principal Lecturer in Early childhood Studies at University of Roehampton. Dr Peter Elfer has a long standing interest in the well being of babies and children under three in nursery. His current research concerns the different impact of different types of nursery organisation and management on staff and their interactions with children. He is working on the role of Work Discussion Groups in supporting nursery staff think about and develop interactions with children under three and with their families. Peter wrote the ‘in depth’ guidance on the key person role for the new Early Years Foundation Stage.
