How to work with Children who have Suffered Loss or Family Separation

Target Group:
All school staff, Early year’s settings staff, Social workers, foster carers and Family Centre workers.

Course Aims:

  • To develop an understanding of loss and separation experienced by children/young people.
  • Common reactions to loss/separation.
  • To feel more confident in your approach when speaking and engaging with children/YP who have suffered loss/separation.
  • School planning.
  • This will encapsulate children in care, children who’s parents are in prison, there is an overlap with bereavement.
  • This is not a course on Bereavement.


Intended Impact:

  • To develop your knowledge and have an overview of a child’s feelings associated with loss/separation.
  • To gain a wider understanding of loss/separation and its effects on children and their behaviour.
