Target Group:
Anyone who administers basic first aid.

Course Aims:
Following course attendance, course members should be able to:-

  • Administer basic first aid in an emergency
  • Demonstrate mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compression
  • Observe personal protection and hygiene procedures
  • Perform practical first aid duties in accordance with training given and requirements of the school
  • Record and report information and treatment details to comply with legislation

  • Scope and Aims of First Aid in the School
  • Incident Management
  • Your priorities when dealing with casualties
  • Communication within the school structure
  • History-Signs-Symptoms
  • Examination of the casualty
  • Unconsciousness
  • Dealing with an unconscious casualty
  • Recovery Position - why, when and how (practical)
  • Resuscitation
  • Resuscitation of infants, children and adults (practical)
  • Choking, the action during an emergency
  • Dealing with breathing difficulties-asthma, hyperventilation
  • Personal Protection and Hygiene
  • General Hygiene
  • Transmission of infection/clearing up of spillage's i.e. blood
  • Reducing the risk of infection
  • First Aid rooms and boxes
  • Purchasing supplies and restocking boxes and travelling kits
  • Record keeping/accident reporting
  • Specific First Aid in Schools
  • General First Aid in Schools
  • Review of the two days
