Understanding, Observation and Managing Behaviour 1-3

Target Group:
All staff working with children/young people wishing to develop their understanding of behaviour in children & young people

Course Aims:

Understanding Behaviour

  • To provide a basic – intermediate level of understanding of behaviour and underpinning theories of behaviour.
  • To consider goals of behaviour & the impact on children & young people ( their development &  learning)
  • To identify how to analyse behaviour in order to develop effective management strategies.

Observation of Behaviour

  • To identify how to analyse behaviour in order to develop effective management strategies.
  • To analyse the  goals of behaviour & the impact on children & young people (& their development & learning)

Managing Behaviour

  • To provide an understanding of challenging behaviours
  • To analyse the goals of behaviour & the impact on children (& their development and learning)
  • To develop effective behaviour management strategies.


Intended Impact:

Understanding Behaviour

  • To support practitioners in understanding of behaviour
  • To improve confidence in identifying cause and effect in behaviour, emotional and social difficulties.
  • To  support the professional development of practitioners in managing behaviour, emotional and social difficulties for children and young people

Observation of Behaviour

  • To support practitioners in understanding the role of observation in understanding and managing behaviour
  • To improve confidence in the identification of the causes of behaviours
  • To support the professional development of practitioners in implementing observations to support assessment of pupils BESD needs

Managing Behaviour

  • To support practitioners in development of strategies to manage challenging behaviour
  • To improve confidence in managing behaviour, emotional and social difficulties.
  • To provide an opportunity for staff to share good practice and develop solution orientated and supportive practice.

Need to attend all 3 sessions!
