SATs RESULTS PUBLISHED

Key Stage 2 SATs results for the Isle of Wight have been published today, with an increase in the important level 4 English and Maths indicator.

Figures from the government show the number of 11 year olds achieving level 4 at English and Maths has risen two points to 69 compared to last year. However, this remains five points behind the national average.

The most successful area was level 4 writing, which has seen a huge eight point increase in performance, up from 59 last year to 67 this year.

Pupils obtaining level 4 in English has risen four points to 80 compared to 2009, but there has been a slight dip in performance at level 4 reading, which has slipped one to 83 points.

There has also been a drop in performance at level 4 Maths, with the Isle of Wight down to 75 points compared to 76 last year.

Isle of Wight Council Leader David Pugh said "We should acknowledge the improvements we have seen over the last year, especially in level 4 writing which is very encouraging, and the rise in the important English and Maths level 4 indicator.

"However, there has been disappointing slips in standards at level 4 reading and level 4 maths, and this will need to be addressed for next year.

"We do strongly feel the move to a two-tier system from this September will be a significant part of raising educational standards and I fully expect to see our performances increase again next year. We will continue to work closely with our middle schools during the 2010-11 transition year, ahead of primary schools assuming full responsibility for the delivery of Key Stage 2 from September 2011 onwards."
