Apprenticeships

The Isle of Wight Council supports the Apprenticeship scheme and believes it is an important programme to help tackle a number of issues facing the local government sector. Skills shortages and an aging workforce mean we must attract and recruit more young people, like you!

What are the benefits of becoming a Apprentice with the Isle of Council?

Apprenticeships are designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge to be able to do a real job with real responsibilities with the Council. We have run a successful Modern Apprenticeship scheme for many years and many of our Apprentices have gone on to secure other roles with the Council and continued on various development and training programmes to gain other qualifications.

How do Apprenticeships work?

An Apprentice employed by the Council is treated like any other employee, the only difference is that you would be offered the kind of on-the-job training which allows you to achieve National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). You would also spend time with a learning provider, gaining key skills that will be useful in your role like working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology. In addition, you would normally study for a technical certificate, which would give you further knowledge and understanding of the job.
How long do Apprenticeships last?
Depending on how hard you work and where your strengths lie skills wise, it will usually take at least a year for you to work towards a National Vocational Qualification at Level 2. Advanced Apprenticeships usually last at least two years and you’d work towards a National Vocational Qualification at Level 3, Key Skills and a technical certificate.
What kind of people are we looking to recruit as Apprentices?

To ensure that you would be successful in completing your apprenticeship with the council and can go on to gain other roles with us you’ll need to demonstrate amongst other things that you are:
  • Flexible
  • Committed
  • Prepared for further study
  • Realistic about the amount of work you may have to do
  • Committed to giving excellent customer service
