Businesses

Businesses, large and small, are subject to a wide range of legislation designed to protect the consumer, and to promote a fair and safe trading environment. Whether you manufacture, import or retail goods, or provide a service, you are subject to these laws.

In support of businesses we offer advice on systems for compliance and advise on individual products and services. The Trading Standards Service aims to help you understand and meet your legal responsibilities.

Weights and Measures

Each year checks are carried out on a wide range of instruments used to weigh and measure goods, everything from weighbridges to jewellers balances. Tests are also carried out on the quantity of goods sold, from coal to beer, from bread to petrol.

Age Restricted Sales

We regularly visit traders selling age-restricted products to give advice about the law on selling goods such as alcohol, fireworks and tobacco. There are strict penalties for selling such goods to young people.

Animal Health & Welfare

We visit farms to check that the health of livestock is maintained. Movement control records are kept so that animals can be quickly traced in the event of an outbreak of serious notifiable disease, such as foot and mouth or swine fever.

Product Safety

The Isle of Wight Trading Standards Service’s role includes the authority to ensure that all new and second hand goods offered for sale are safe and fit for their purpose.

Agriculture

We are responsible for maintaining standards in all aspect of agriculture. The Isle of Wight Trading Standards Service aims to ensure that animal feed and fertilizers are of a satisfactory quality and safe to use.

Fair Trading

Fair Trading is a large part of our work and includes pricing, false descriptions on goods and services, counterfeit goods, hallmarking, doorstep sales and Estate Agency.

Consumer Credit
