Island's Energy Demand

Energy demand and supply at local authority level has been measured by DECC since 2005. Data is published for the two years prior to this on an experimental basis.

In 2007, total Island energy consumption was 2,733.3 gigawatt hours (GWh). This was primarily through the use of natural gas (1,276.6 GWh), electricity (575.5 GWh) and petroleum products (848.2 GWh) and also includes coal, manufactured fuels and energy from waste and renewable sources.

Energy consumption has declined from 2,924.7 GWh in 2005 to 2,733.3 GWh in 2007. Click here for further information on Island energy demand and supply

Looking in more detail at gas and electricity consumption, total electricity consumption fell from 625 GWh in 2005 to 575.5 GWh in 2008. There was, however, a slight increase to 587.9 GWh in 2008. Gas consumption has fallen year on year from 1,381 GWh in 2005 to 1,159.1 GWh in 2008. Click here for further information on Island gas and electricity consumption

Use of transport fuel has remained relatively constant, rising slightly from 39,500 tonnes of fuel in 2005 to 39,900 tonnes of fuel in 2007. Approximately 75% of consumption is for personal transport and 25% for freight transport.  Click here for further information on Island transport fuel consumption
