Local Housing Allowance – Reviews and Appeals
What is Local Housing Allowance?
Local Housing Allowance (LHA) is a new way of working out Housing Benefit for tenants in private rented accommodation. It is based on:
- • what area you live in
- • who lives with you
- • what money you have coming in
- • what savings you have
Local Housing Allowance is fair
Tenants with similar circumstances living in the same area will usually get the same amount of LHA. LHA is based on rent levels for the area you live in and how many people live with you and not the amount of rent that you pay.
If there is a change in the number of people living in your household the amount of LHA you get may change.
For more information about the size of properties and local rates contact the Housing Benefit Office on 01983 823950 or visit www.iwight.com.
If you disagree with the councils decision
If you think our decision about your LHA is wrong you can:
- • ask for the decision to be looked at again.
- • ask for an explanation of the decision.
- • ask for a statement of reasons.
- • appeal to an independent appeal tribunal administered by the Tribunal
- Service.
If you want us to look at the decision again, or if you want to appeal against it, you must do so within one month of the date on the decision letter.
