Urban Grass Cutting
Amenity Grass
Grass cutting in residential areas, usually within a 30 or 40 mph speed limit, is carried out to a high standard and helps to promote a pleasing and tidy appearance. This is referred to as Amenity Grass cutting.
Amenity Grass is cut 16 times a year, beginning in early March and finishing in mid-October. Operatives will remove litter prior to cutting and strim around objects on the verge such as lampposts and benches. Grass clippings are not removed from the cut area as the equipment and time required would significantly increase the cost of the service. The clippings are relatively short and mulch down quickly which helps to suppress re-growth. Paved areas will be left free of grass clippings after the verges are cut.
Please do not park on grass verges, especially in wet weather. This not only causes rutting of the verge but makes access difficult for the contractor who cannot then cut the grass. Decorative stones or logs should not be placed on the verges as these can be a hazard.
Whilst the Council is responsible for a large number of the grassed areas open to the public, some are owned and maintained by other bodies such as Housing Associations and Parish Councils.
Urban Footpaths
Verges alongside public footpaths are now maintained by
Rights of Way.
