Wellow Decision Postponed

The planning application for a wind farm on land to the south of Wellow has attracted unprecedented levels of interest and raises a wide range of issues, which require careful consideration.

In particular, English Nature has advised the Isle of Wight Council that the proposal could have a significant impact on sites in the Solent area, designated under European law for their nature conservation value and, in accordance with the Habitat Regulations 1994, the proposal should therefore be subject to an Appropriate Assessment.

The council as the competent authority must carry out this process. In addition, we are aware that the consultant acting on behalf of the applicant intends to submit an addendum to the Environmental Statement, which will supplement the information already provided.

It was intended that the application would be considered at a special meeting of the Development Control Sub Committee to be held on Monday 25 September 2006.
However, in order to accommodate the preparation and consideration of the Appropriate Assessment and to enable the council both to fully consider the information contained in the addendum and to carry out a thorough assessment of the issues raised by consultees and third parties, a decision has been taken to postpone the meeting.

The meeting has been rescheduled for Monday 30 October 2006 and will be held at Medina Theatre, Newport, commencing at 6pm.

An application for the installation of six wind turbines and associated infrastructure has now been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council. The application site is located to the immediate south and west of Wellow and Thorley Street. This application is now open to consultation until the 21st July 2006.
