The Isle of Wight Record Office undertakes research for those who are not able to visit the office in person. Initially a limited one off free search can be made using sources held in the Record Office. Any further search will be subject to a fee of £22 for one hour. Additional searches of one hour can be commissioned. Where we believe a search is beyond the resources of the office we will notify you of this. There is no charge for those wishing to consult records themselves.













FREE SEARCH






There are a range of Free Searches. These include:




  • Information on sources
  • A search for an Enquirers own baptism entry
  • A check of a single address for one year on an Electoral Register, (1920-2007), if address is given down to street level
  • A single entry in a rate book where the volume is arranged by address (the address will need to be supplied)
  • A check of up to 10 years for a baptism, marriage or burial in the card index which covers the period 1538-1900
  • A check of our fiche index covering baptisms or marriages for the period 1900-1910. For baptisms, the names of siblings within the same period will be supplied.
  • A check of our baptism index 1900-1920 the names of any siblings found during this period will also be provided.
  • Baptisms post 1920:A single entry can be checked against the original register, if the year and the name of the parish are supplied.
  • Marriages post 1910: A single entry can be checked against the original register, if the year and the name of the parish are supplied.
  • An index to parish burials has now been completed to cover all the 20th century registers on deposit in the Record Office. This index can be checked for a burial. The index for civil cemetery burials will be included in our search.
  • A list of parish registers held on deposit in the Record Office can be found on this web site under "Our Collections" - "Catalogues" - "Parish Registers".
  • A check for an individual in the 1841, 1851, 1871, 1881 or 1891 census surname index.
  • At the discretion of the Archivist a search that would take less than 10 minutes to complete.

A Free Search will be undertaken on a "one off" basis. Any further request will be subject to our Paid Research Service.





PAID RESEARCH






  • Please complete the accompanying request form
  • Send the form together with your payment made payable to the Isle of Wight Council in pounds sterling to the Isle of Wight Record Office. Alternatively, post the form to the Record Office and make your payment by Credit Card by phoning the Record Office on 01983 823820/1. Please do not include your Credit Card details in any written communication. If you live outside the United Kingdom it is advisable to send the Record Office an email to arrange a convenient time to make your card payment
  • The search will be carried out by staff under the supervision of an Archivist
  • A reply should be sent to you within 3 weeks of the day your enquiry is received
  • A copy of our report will be placed in a family file, which will be made available to members of the public after a two-year period has elapsed unless you specifically stat that you do not wish this to happen




Please note:







  • Payment must be made in advance
  • You will be paying for the search and not for the results. Unfortunately, we cannot refund your fee if an extensive search has not proved successful
  • Photocopies are charged for separately
  • Postage will be charged (see below)

MICROFILM/FICHE SEARCH





Where material on microfilm/fiche has to be searched the fee is also £22/Hour.




Short searches can also be made of material on microfilm/fiche. Because of the time taken these, attract a charge of £5 per film/fiche consulted (UK/EU/Europe) and £6 overseas other than EU/Europe + the cost of any printout supplied.




Entries which can be checked at this reduced rate include:




  • Local Newspapers: The Isle of Wight County Press from 1884, the Isle of Wight Observer from 1852 to 1922 and the Isle of Wight Times 1862-1974 (you wil1 need to supply the relevant year). Please note that some years are missing for a complete list of newspapers please refer to this web site for covering dates - Our Collections - Newspapers
  • Census Returns (address required)
  • Parish Register (year and parish required)
