The National Drugs Helpline is a 24-hour, seven-days a week, free and confidential telephone service that offers advice and information for those who are concerned, or have questions, about drugs. The service is available to anyone.

Callers might be drug users, recovering or past users, friends, family, colleagues or contacts of drug users.

The Helpline not only provides advice but also confidential counselling to callers who think they have a drug related problem. All staff employed on the Helpline are experienced drug workers. Each has a minimum of two years relevant experience, and many are qualified counsellors.

For help and advice on alcohol related issues call Drinkline.

Drinkline offers the following services;

  • Information and self-help materials.
  • Help to callers worried about their own drinking.
  • Support to the family and friends of people who are drinking.
  • Advice to callers on where to go for help.

Drinkline is a confidential service and no names need be given. Callers to the above number have the option of listening to recorded information about alcohol or talking to an adviser.

Cranstoun provide a confidential free service for people over the age of 18 years with concerns regarding their drug use.  They can provide:

  • Advice and information regarding your drug use
  • Harm minimisation
  • Auricular acupuncture (ear acupuncture)
  • Healthy eating
  • Referral into treatment
  • Open access Monday, Wednesday and Friday

They also provide:

  • a breakfast club once a week,
  • workshops on specific areas of substance misuse including cannabis and crack use;
  • relaxation sessions,
  • one to one key working 
  • group work sessions. 

The Drug Intervention Programme is based at Cranstoun and provides a range of support and access to drug treatment for people who are involved in the criminal justice system.

The Isle of Wight Substance Misuse User Group.  Result is a user-led organisation, promoting social inclusion and providing opportunities for people overcoming drug and alcohol misuse.  The provide:

  • a bi-monthly newsletter
  • an advocacy service
  • peer led education and workshops
  • peer support

Island Drug and Alcohol Service  (IDAS)

The Island Drug and Alcohol Service (IDAS) provides advice, information, support, counselling and treatment for people with drug- and alcohol- related problems, their partners, family and friends.
Specific services provided include advice and information on:

  • The effects/consequences of drug/alcohol use
  • Safer injecting practices
  • Safer drug and alcohol use and how to reduce health risks
  • Sexual health, HIV/AIDS, and safer sex
  • Basic health care

Other services offered include:

  • Arrangements for community or inpatient drug or alcohol detoxification
  • Support for those awaiting rehabilitation
  • Support, advice and counselling for clients on remand or serving a custodial sentence at one of the Island's prisons
  • Free sterile supplies of injecting equipment and a safe disposal for used works.
  • Safer injecting advice
  • Free condoms

IDAS also provides information and advice on drug and alcohol problems to members of the public and other agencies.  We have a wide range of information leaflets covering alcohol, substance use, HIV/AIDS and safer sex.


Alcohol Team

The Alcohol Team is based at IDAS and can assess people who would like an alcohol detox.  The can provide motivational counselling and relapse prevention support to those who are eligible for services.

The Island Drug and Alcohol Service offer a service to families and friends of substance misusers.

You can contact them if:

  • You are a parent, family member or carer who would like to be better informed on drug and alcohol issues
  • You are concerned about someone you love and their use of drugs or alcohol
  • You want someone to talk in confidence about these issues

You can contact the Family Service Co-ordinator on the above number.  The service is confidential and you do not have to give your name.

We offer a holistic, needs-led service for young people and their families / carers affected by substance misuse.  We also offer advice and training to other agencies working with young people.
If you are a young person / parent / carer and  want to talk to someone about drugs or alcohol we provide:

  • a specialist team
  • friendly, safe, confidential up-to-date advice on drugs/alcohol use.
  • Screening / assessment.
  • support, an outreach service, one-to-one key work and group work.

The Drug Action Team offers a Tier 4a Care Management Service that provides specialist alcohol and drug assessment for people who abuse substances.  This service is available to people who are in need of structured care and treatment because of substance use.  Not every assessment will result in having structured treatment.  The care manager will give information and refer you to the most appropriate agency to meet your needs.

Crisis Services

If you think you are in crisis with your alcohol or drug use you can contact one of the above services for advice.  You can also ring your GP. 

What to do in an emergency

If you think someone has overdosed, dial 999 immediately and ask for the ambulance service. 

Give as much information as you can about what you believe the person affected has used.  Give any unusual tablets or substances to ambulance service staff when they arrive.
