Press Release

COUNCIL AND COMMUNITY WORK TO PROTECT VULNERABLE Date Published: 07/01/2010 Expires: 07/02/2010

This Press Release has expired.

People across the Island have been urged to keep an extra eye out for vulnerable members of the community during what is expected to be the Island's most severe cold snap for many years.

At the same time, the authority is working to maintain as many frontline services as possible and is re-iterating the contact numbers that are available to help ensure that the needs of vulnerable people are met around the clock.

Cllr Dawn Cousins, IW Council cabinet member responsible for social care, said: "Once again the Island community has already demonstrated its unique ability to rally round and provide neighbourly support. These sterling efforts have provided invaluable support to services such as Meals on Wheels and is to be warmly welcomed and applauded.

"We are sure that this type of support will continue but at the same time we would ask people to be extra vigilant about the needs of their neighbours especially the vulnerable during this challenging time."

Cllr Cousins said a great number of staff throughout the Island had displayed great dedication and professionalism to ensure as many services as possible remained unaffected. For example all of the council's adult social services offices in Newport (823340), Cowes (291144), Sandown (408448) and Ryde (566011) are open during normal office hours.

"Inevitably though, because of the difficult conditions, it has not been possible to avoid some disruption to services but work had been done to provide for those residents most in need.

"However all of the council's adult social services offices are open."

"It is important that we continue this work and the support of the public will be invaluable. I would like to remind everyone that the out of hours emergency number for Wightcare is 821105 and during office hours it is 533772."
