Vanessa Claire ChurchmanAs the local member for Havenstreet, Ashey and Haylands, it is my role to represent those living within the ward on the Isle of Wight Council.


I was re-elected on 4 June and with the boundary changes now represent nearly 3,000 constituents. The new boundary changes now include part of Briddlesford Road and the whole of Havenstreet, together with all of Ashey Road up to and including Upton Road. As a matter of interest the Ward includes 2 of the major tourist attractions on the Island: Isle of Wight Steam Railway and Robin Hill Country Park which hosts the Bestival in September.

Biography: Vanessa Churchman is married with 2 sons of whom one, Peter, lives and works on the Island. A keen sportswoman she has run 3 London Marathons and still plays and umpires netball. She is an avid gardener.

A business woman for over thirty five years Vanessa has now given up the picture framing business in Bembridge so that she can devote more time to her Ward and the Council. She still maintains her fitness by running and walking her dog. Once again this year she did "Walk the Wight" in aid of the Hospice and she has now clocked up 14 years raising money for this charity and as far as she knows is the only Councillor who has 'walked' consistently for the last 7 years.

Cllr Churchman is Chair of Overview & Scrutiny and sits on the Planning Committee. This year she has been appointed by the UK Govt. to the Council of Europe (not to be confused with the European Union) for the next 4 years. She will represent the Independent Councillors in the UK on behalf of the Local Government Association.
