Pre-employment Checks

Before any offer of employment is confirmed we need to undertake various checks to ensure your suitability for the post. These will include:

Medical Clearance

You will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire, which you must send to our Occupational Health Service (OHS). Depending on the information you provide on your application form and the answers on your declaration of health form, you may be required to undergo an examination by our Occupational Health Service (OHS). Please note that if you have a disability our responsibility is to put in place any reasonable adjustments to your workplace, which will help to minimise the effect of such disability, and our OHS will be able to advise on this.

References

You are required to provide the names of two referees when you make your application for employment. These references are very important, and if we do not receive them we cannot confirm your appointment if your application is successful. It is essential that we receive two satisfactory references before you start work with us and we therefore we will ask you to follow up the matter with your referees as a matter of urgency. If either or both raises queries about your suitability for the post you have applied for, we may withdraw the offer of employment altogether.

Checks in relation to your right to live and work in the UK

You may be aware that the Government is very concerned to reduce the incidence of illegal working in the UK. As a result, there has been an amendment to the relevant legislation, and employers are now required to check that new and prospective employees have the right to live and work in the UK. Any employment with us is therefore conditional on the production of specific original documentation to establish that you have this right. In most cases we ask to see a current British passport but will send details regarding other appropriate documentation should you not have a current passport.

Criminal record check

Your appointment may also be subject to a ‘criminal record’ check. This check is carried out to help identify people who are unsuitable for certain work involving contact with children and other vulnerable people. The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) has been set up by the Home Office to undertake all such checks on employers’ behalf, you will be asked to complete a ‘Disclosure Application Form’ in order for the check to be carried out. The council will bear the cost of any application.

Qualifications and professional membership

If the post you have applied to requires you to hold and maintain a professional qualification and/or membership of a professional body, we require you to show us copies of your certificates. We also require copies for our records of any other qualification certificates you may hold and which are relevant to your post: for example, vocational and other educational qualifications such as GCSE/’O’ levels, NVQs, ‘A’ levels, degree, postgraduate qualifications etc.

Social workers only

All newly-appointed social workers are required to show that they have registered with the General Social Care Council (GSCC). You are also required to maintain that registration if you wish to remain employed by the Isle of Wight Council as a social worker.
