Our approach to Enforcement

We have adapted the principles of good enforcement practice set out in a concordat between local and central government.
We help businesses to comply but take firm action against those that flout the law or act irresponsibly.

We aim to:

  • measure our performance
  • adopt an open and transparent approach
  • assist businesses to "get it right first time"
  • act in a helpful and courteous manner
  • make enforcement decisions proportionate to risk
  • strive to be consistent
  • publish our complaints procedure
When investigations are conducted they will be undertaken in accordance with legal requirements and Home Office guidelines. Before instituting proceedings we aim to ensure;
  • that there is reliable evidence that an identified person has committed a criminal offence
  • we have regard for any statutory defence that may be available
  • the proceedings are in the public interest
