Environmental Health - Public Health

Service Description: The Area Health Authority has a responsibility to report any cases of specified infectious diseases to the Council. These specified illnesses include conditions as diverse as Legionnaires, Typhoid and Paratyphoid fevers, Asbestosis,Tuberculosis, Meningitis, Anthrax and Rabies.

If you believe that your work environment is making you ill, then you should contact the council's environmental health department.

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Health Protection Unit (HPU) has confirmed that schools no longer need to complete and return the Infectious Diseases Form (known as WM9) to either the LA or Health Authority – it is now obsolete.

The Health Protection Unit (HPU) advise that the legal responsibility for notifying a case of infectious disease rests with the diagnosing doctor, and not schools. However schools are encouraged to report outbreaks and possible incidents of concern to the HPU – usually by telephoning in the first instance e.g. school believes a child has been diagnosed with TB and wants to know what to do. They are used to dealing with all sorts of concerns schools may have e.g. measles case, scabies, meningitis case etc.
