Services for Adults on the Isle of Wight

Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11yrs)

Schools, Brownies, Cubs or any other community group is invited to take advantage of the activities for key stage 2 children. All activity packs include curriculum links so you can see how they fit in with your lessons. Choose as stand alone sessions or link together for a rounded grounding in waste issues. Borrow the equipment complete with how-to guide, or book a member of the waste team to run the session for you.

The iDome is a portable, inflatable tent that allows 360 degrees film projection. Wilson’s wonderful world of waste is a specially made immersive film to introduce key stage 1 and 2 children landfill, reduce, reuse, and recycling. Give it a grow aims to encourage primary school pupils to get stuck into gardening and composting. Join as a class, year group, gardening club, or whole school. Enter as many categories as you like and submit your garden journal by 12th November 2010. Click here for more details.

Busta and Pong assembly
15 minutes to Save the Earth! A special intergalactic transmission broadcast (almost) live to your school. The assembly introduces the key issues of waste and recycling, and pauses to allow the transmission to be tailored to the local recycling system via a sorting team game. The transmission ends with Busta and Pong’s recycling rap song!

Create a recycling rap
The music resources from Recycle Now include teacher notes, worksheets, and a power-point quiz to recap the ideas introduced in the Busta and Pong assembly. In groups create and perform a rap about why, what and where to recycle.

Might be Useful
Follow the story of Stan as he collects objects to reuse from the Landfill site. “Can I have that? Might be useful” Borrow Stan’s big might be useful box of recycled musical instruments to sing recycling songs. Borrow the might be useful resource pack to learn about waste through literacy and music

The story of Stan comes as a laminated A3 story book plus smaller books to read and follow. Stan’s “might be useful box” contains around 30 recycled instruments with suggested recycling songs. The might be useful resource pack includes guided reading notes, literacy learning objectives, and speaking and listening activities.

Make your own recycled instruments
After playing with the might be useful box, or as a stand alone activity, children will enjoy decorating pots filled with bottle tops, or beads to make exciting noises they can take home - parents will be thrilled! Use this activity to illustrate that every day objects have more than one use.

Tour a compost bin
Borrow the DVD from us, or follow the link to take a tour inside a compost bin with George the Foreman. A fun, informative introduction to composting. This short animated film from WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) is complimented by the creative composting and rot pot activities.

Creative Composting
Use the creative composting pack from WRAP to educate and enthral pupils in composting. The pack contains pupil resource and activity cards and teacher work cards introducing you to the world of composting. Use as is, or in conjunction with the compost bin tour and rot pot activity.

Rot Pots
Rot pots are mini composters made from a 2 litre plastic bottle. Children can make their own rot pot and monitor how the material breaks down over time. Compost from successful rot pots could then be used for a cress head or similar easy to grow seeds. Follow our instructions or book a session with a member of the waste team.

Make your own recycled paper
Demonstrate the meaning of recycling with our paper making kit. Each pupil can experience first hand how used paper can be pulped and recycled into new paper, then “close the loop” and use the paper in class in a follow up activity. Follow the instructions or book a session with a member of the waste team.

Visit the landfill site
We are able to host a walk around the landfill site to illustrate the size of waste on the Island! Children will enjoy seeing the birds of prey, large piles of compost, lorries going through the wheel wash and of course the landfill itself.

All activities are usually preceded with a discussion about waste and the importance of recycling.
