Street Cleansing
Litter bins
Approximately 1100 litter bins are provided and routinely emptied as part of the Street Cleansing Contract. This includes litter bins in most car parks, parks, town centres, some lay-bys and residential streets. Litter bins in Cemeteries are dealt with by the Cemeteries Department of the Council (882288).
Emptying litter bins
Emptying frequencies vary from twice daily to once a week depending on the location of the bin and the time of year. Emptying of the litter bins is carried out separately from the cleansing of a street and is done by a separate vehicle. The bins are disinfected once a month.
Misuse of litter bins
Litter bins are provided for the disposal of litter. They should not be used for bags of household waste or bags of commercial/trade waste which is an offence. Such inappropriate use can cause the bins to over flow and means that we have to empty them more frequently at an additional cost. It is acceptable to use litter bins to dispose of dog fouling which has been removed from the road or pavement in an area where there are no dog bins.
Damaged bins
Bins are occasionally damaged by vehicles or vandals. Please report any severe damage to us.
