Though women gained the vote in 1918 it was only for those over 30. They gained equality with men in 1928 when their voting age was reduced to 21. The voting age was reduced again in 1968 to 18 years for both men and women.

From 2003 people have been able to opt for their name not to appear on the register available to the public. This has led to the publication of an edited register available for public viewing.
