Highways
The Highways and Transportation Section of the Directorate of Environmental Services is based at Enterprise House, St.Cross Business Park, Newport. It provides 24-hour cover throughout the year to attend highway emergencies such as fallen trees, flooding of roads and inoperative traffic lights. When frost or snow is forecast, 185 miles of the Island's road network is pre-treated with salt. 14 snow blade / gritting lorries are available for use during extreme conditions. Sand bags are provided to stop primarily, the flooding of properties by water running off the highway, but whenever possible, they will be issued to members of the public wishing to safeguard their houses.
