On Wednesday 16th February the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Act received Royal Assent and became law. The Act provides for a referendum on the voting system for UK Parliamentary elections to be held on 5th May 2011.

The referendum question that will be asked is:

At present, the UK uses the ‘first past the post’ system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the ‘alternative vote’ system be used instead?

In order for electors to be able to make an informed choice when they cast their vote in the referendum, The Electoral Commission will be sending a booklet to every household in the United Kingdom which will include an explanation of the two voting systems and how they work. It is anticipated that this booklet will be delivered by mid-April.

Further information on the referendum can be found on the website of The Electoral Commission.

If you wish to exercise your right to vote at this referendum then you will need to be registered as an elector. If you returned your registration form last summer then your name should be on our Register, but you may check your entry if you wish by calling into County Hall, Newport, or by contacting us on 01983 821000. Please be aware that, as is the case for Parliamentary elections, European Union citizens will not be able to vote in the referendum.

There are no local elections being held on the Isle of Wight this year – the next planned elections for the Isle of Wight Council and Town and Parish Councils will be held in May 2013.

If you are not registered as an elector, then please use this link to download the register of electors application form – we must receive this completed form by 14th April 2011 at the latest.

Electors who wish to apply for a Postal or Proxy vote will need to do so in good time. The last date to amend an existing Proxy or Postal vote and to apply for a new Postal Vote is 14th April, whilst the last date to apply for a new Proxy vote is 21st April.

There have been some minor changes to Polling Stations in some areas, so watch out for your Poll Card, which will be delivered to you in early April, and will give full details of your allocated Polling Station.
