The Road Safety Team offers child pedestrian training to Island pupils through their schools. This training is usually offered to Year 1 Primary School pupils, on a weekly basis over the course of a four week period. This is followed by a condensed repeater course in Year 4.
The on road training is an initiative offering practical roadside training to young children. The best place to teach road safety is the local road environment. All training takes place on routes around the school that have been risk assessed by the Road Safety Team. Volunteer tutors, who have undergone training, instruct children at the roadside how to cope with traffic in different situations. The training covers three skills and is taught to children at the roadside - these include:
· Finding a safe place to cross Children are taught how to recognise dangerous roadside locations where crossing should not be attempted and how to find safer routes.
· Crossing safely at parked cars The aim is to teach children a strategy for crossing at parked cars where this is unavoidable.
· Crossing safely at junctions Children are taught how to position themselves at junctions so that they can see down all roads.
Ultimately the training aims to improve children’s perception of speed and distance, to increase awareness of sound and sight and to help children to discover for themselves safe practices.
The Road Safety Team, in partnership with the school, appoints volunteer tutors to assist no more than 3 children each throughout the training course. All tutors receive thorough training from the Road Safety Team. A member of the Road Safety Team is always on hand to offer support and advice to every volunteer tutor. All tutors undergo a Criminal Records Bureau check. The routes identified around the school for the training sessions are risk assessed by a Road Safety Officer and fluorescent yellow jackets are provided by the Road Safety Team and must be worn by all tutors and children when training takes place.
