MY-I (Mobile Youth Initiative)

C/o Ryde Youth Centre, 97 High Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight PO33 2SZ.

Mobile Youth Initiatives was developed by various professional organisations on the Isle of Wight.

MY-I provides a youth service to rural, isolated areas of the Island - currently covering Brighstone, Chale Green and Winford. MY-I can act quickly to assist young people who require a meeting space and are always happy to respond to suggestions from groups of five or more young people aged 13 to 19 about new areas to work in.

MY-I aims to:

  • meet with young people in their area to discuss and look at development opportunities together thus enabling young people to have an effective voice and therefore enjoyable, successful, healthy and safe lives;
  • support young people in developing personal and social relationships;
  • promote a positive image of young people;
  • ensure effective services exist for the benefit of young people;
  • provide a safe meeting space for young people living in rural areas.

In 2013 a new Youth Truck will be providing services on the Island, as well as being a place just to hang out:

  • we will be able to offer study support and information on educational issues, work opportunities, and provide free access to laptops, computers and IT;
  • the bus will be warm and welcoming with lighting, heating and hot drink making facilities combined with an array of arts and sports equipment on board;
  • sessions will be open to young people aged 13 to 19;
  • we will let you know when we will arriving in your neighbourhood.

Youth Pride (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender support group - based in Newport)

Whether you are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, not sure or confused about your sexuality - it’s OK however you see yourself. We offer a friendly non-judgemental environment.

The group aims to empower young people and encourage you to have your say about future events and activities. So far there has been a strong interest in films and music and relationships of course.

There are two youth workers who have experience of working in education, youth work, young people’s counselling and are aware of the stigma, isolation and difficult emotions that young people who are questioning/coming to terms with their sexuality might face.

Youth Pride meets in Newport each Tuesday from 6.30pm to 9pm.
