Looked After Children Education Service


Service Description: LACES is the Isle of Wight Children’s Services Looked after Children’s Education Service. LACES are a small team working to improve the educational attainment and participation of children and young people in public care. LACES provide support, advice, information and training to Social Workers, Designated Teachers and Parents/Carers. The team also provide targeted support to children and young people in care.

Question: What are some of the signs I should look for, if I think a child is being neglected?

Answer: You should be worried when a child:
• Appears delayed in their development
• Appears to be too thin or always hungry
• Is left alone or looked after by an unsuitable baby-sitter
• Lacks friendships
• Is not clothed properly and is often dirty and smelly
• Has untreated injuries or illnesses
• Has a lot of accidents and, due to lack of supervision, is allowed to get into dangerous situations
• Lives in squalid conditions
