Service Description: A change in a persons circumstances that could affect their liability to pay Council Tax. For example a change of address, change of entitlement to a discounts/exemption or disabled band relief.

Question: I have purchased a house but not moved in yet as it is uninhabitable. Do I have to pay Council Tax?

Answer: The property must be in need of or undergoing major structural repair in order to render it habitable to qualify for this exemption. Any exemption is awarded to the property, irrespective of who the owner is. The exemption is for a maximum period of twelve months. Our Visiting Officer will need to view the property to confirm eligibility (please supply contact details). Further exemption period can not be granted unless the property has been occupied as someones main residence for a period in excess of 6 weeks.
