Service Description: Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit are benefits paid by Local Authorities to help towards the cost or Rent and Council Tax. Council Tax Benefit will be replaced on 1 April 2013 by the new Council Tax Support Scheme.

Question: If I own my own house, can I still claim Council Tax Benefit?

Answer: Anyone who is on low income can apply for Council Tax benefit to help with the payment of Council Tax.

If you have more than £16,000 in savings we cannot usually pay you any benefit.
