Service Description: Council Tax is a tax on domestic property collected by your local council. The council tax provides approximately 20% of the council’s gross budget and is a vital element in raising revenue which contributes towards the provision of services to residents.

Question: I have purchased a house but not moved in yet as it is uninhabitable. Do I have to pay Council Tax?

Answer: The property must be in need of or undergoing major structural repair in order to render it habitable to qualify for this exemption. Any exemption is awarded to the property, irrespective of who the owner is. The exemption is for a maximum period of twelve months. Our Visiting Officer will need to view the property to confirm eligibility (please supply contact details). Further exemption period can not be granted unless the property has been occupied as someones main residence for a period in excess of 6 weeks.
