Waste Strategy and Contract Procurement

Service Description: The current household waste contract comes to an end in 2015 providing us with an opportunity to explore new ways of managing the Island’s waste. We are in the process of developing a new waste strategy for how our waste should be dealt with in the future that may include utilising new technologies. As well as increasing recycling, we will be looking at ways to treat waste as a resource from which we can generate heat and power for the Island.

Your FAQ

Question: Why do we need a new waste strategy?

Answer: The council currently has an integrated waste management contract with Island Waste Services. This means that they are contracted to collect, treat and dispose of household and municipal waste. This contract was agreed in 1995 as the UK’s first waste PFI; it will be coming to an end in 2015.
The new waste strategy will look at how the Island could manage waste in the future in preparation for letting a new waste contract.
