Service Description: Local Council Tax Support (LCTS) is the new scheme following the abolition of Council Tax Benefit on 31 March 2013. LCTS helps people on low income pay their Council Tax. If awarded, LCTS is deducted from your Council Tax liability, reducing your bill. To claim LCTS you must be the person liable to pay the council tax bill for a property.
Also known as:- Council Tax Benefit, Council Tax Rebate, Council Tax Support, CTS, LCTS
Answer: The Local Council Tax support scheme compares the income of a claimant to a level of need for them and any family. However, the starting point for the calculation of any help is normally based on 91.5 per cent of the liability if of working age and 100 per cent if of pensionable age. Anyone on a low income including those on DWP benefits can apply to see if they qualify. Those with over £16000.00 in savings are not normally entitled unless they are on Pension Credit guarantee credit.
