Pedestrian Crossings

Service Description: Controlled pedestrian crossings are one of the following: zebra, pelican (red and green man on opposite side of road), puffin (red and green man above push button), toucan (pedestrian and cycle crossing) and a pedestrian phase on a traffic signalled junction.

Your FAQ

Question: Why is there no audio (bleep) on a crossing?

Answer: Audio can only be installed on a pedestian crossing where it cannot be heard from another pedestrian crossing. This avoids the conflict for partially sighted or blind people from using a crossing whilst the traffic is still moving.

Tactile indicators are installed on all new and the majority of existing pedestrian crossings, these let partially sighted and blind people know when it is safe to cross the road.
