Animal Health and Welfare


Service Description: The Animal Health & Welfare section is located within Trading Standards, and relates to the health and welfare of farmed animals. The Animal Health & Welfare inspectorate is responsible for the enforcement of animal health and welfare legislation, with a view to reducing disease risks to both animal and human health. The Animal Health section can advise on record keeping requirements for livestock movements, births and deaths, livestock identification, animal transport, biosecurity, disposal of animal by-products (including animal carcasses) and animal health and disease control measures. We work closely with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) - more information is available from their website below. Question: I keep poultry, do I need to keep records?

Answer: Yes. Under the Diseases of Poultry (England) Order 2003, any person who owns or keeps a flock of at least 250 birds of any species shall keep a record of poultry entering or leaving the premises.

Any person who transports or markets poultry or eggs must keep records. These records must be kept for 12 months.

Under the Avian Influenza (Preventative Measures) (England) Regulations 2006 any person who keeps 50 or more poultry on commercial premises should keep written records and notify DEFRA that they keep poultry. For more information contact DEFRA on 01189 596695 or visit their website.
