Service Description: Teachers or other non-teaching staff may be required to administer medication or supervise a pupil taking it. There is no legal requirement for teachers to administer medication however they are required to ensure the health and safety of all pupils in their care which may therefore extend to administering medication. The Isle of Wight Council can only provide guidance on the procedures Schools may adopt with regards to administering medication to pupils. Each school has its own policy for administering medication to pupils and the School should be contacted directly for details.
Answer: Those who administer medication may have received only minimal training, possibly as a first aider. They will administer medication according to written instructions they are given – this is usually written on the supply. If any more complex treatment is required they should receive appropriate training. - Related Link
