Waste Strategy and Contract Procurement

Service Description: The current household waste contract comes to an end in 2015 providing us with an opportunity to explore new ways of managing the Island’s waste. We are in the process of developing a new waste strategy for how our waste should be dealt with in the future that may include utilising new technologies. As well as increasing recycling, we will be looking at ways to treat waste as a resource from which we can generate heat and power for the Island.

Your FAQ

Question: Why does the Island need a new landfill Site?

Answer: The existing landfill site at Standen Heath is also due to be filled around 2015. In 2009/10 the Island produced 75,753 tonnes of waste, achieved a recycling rate of nearly 32% and diverted 38,743 tonnes of waste from landfill. The council wants to achieve a diversion of all waste to landfill of 86% by 2025 coupled with a household waste recycling rate of 60%. With the long term iasiration of a zero non-essential waste to landfill. As we work towards reaching this target with residents, businesses and industry there will be a need for landfill space.
