Benefits - Housing and Council Tax Benefit Entitlement

Service Description: Housing Benefit is designed to help you pay your rent if you are on a low income. The amount of benefit due to you is worked out by looking at how much money you have coming in, your personal circumstances and how much rent you have to pay, and the amount of savings you have. Council Tax Benefit helps people on low-income pay their Council Tax. If awarded, Council Tax Benefit is deducted from your Council Tax liability, reducing your bill. To claim Council Tax Benefit you must be the person liable to pay the Council Tax bill for a property.

Your FAQ

Question: Are teenage mothers entitled to benefits?

Answer: Young women under 16 are only entitled to child benefit in their own right once the baby is born. Parents of teenage mothers may be able to claim specific benefits on the behalf of the young woman.

Generally 16 and 17 year olds cannot claim benefits until they reach 29 weeks of pregnancy. There is a specific training course for pregnant teens which pays a training allowance. If a young person does not live with her parents she may qualify for benefits.

18s and over may qualify for benefits such as Job Seekers Allowance or Income Support if they are not working. - Related Link
