Dog Breeding Licence

Service Description: Under the Breeding of Dogs Act 1973, as amended by the Breeding and Sale of Dogs (Welfare) Act 1999, you must have a licence from the local authority to keep a breeding establishment for dogs. Premises must be inspected by a local authority officer and a vet prior to issuing of the licence.

Your FAQ

Question: I breed dogs. Do I need a licence?

Answer: If the main purpose for breeding is for showing, you will not need a licence.
If you have more than 5 breeding bitches, you will require a licence under the Breeding of Dogs Acts 1973 and 1991.
If you have less than 5 breeding bitches but are still breeding for sale, you may require a licence.

However, if you are in any doubt you should contact the Licensing Section on 01983 823159 to clarify whether you need a licence.
