Answer: At various times throughout the summer the Isle of Wight does experience an influx of seaweed on the tide line at different locations around the Island. And in some cases this occurrence can cause an unpleasant odour. It must be appreciated that this is a naturally occurring coastal phenomenon and one that the Council has no control over. However when conditions allow the Council does where possible attempt to re-move the accumulation which is taken for local composting, but due to limited resources and technical difficulties this may not be as regular as everyone would wish. The accumulation of seaweed and the associated odour it causes at some locations on the Island has been a problem for a number of years, and the Council does what it can with its available resources to alleviate the situation. However it must be noted that even when the Council’s municipal beaches are cleared the odour may remain as the adjacent private beaches may be effected with an accumulation, or traces from the seaweed may be left in the sand and coastal silts. However unpleasant this smell is to some people there is no danger to public.
